I am writing my PhD thesis and since the last week or so, I have been getting this strange error message on Word: Microsoft Word file suddenly unable to open properly because of "invalid characters". It's problematic because I can't open my previously saved document. Thankfully no text is lost but it's extremely time-consuming. I found out through a similar message that scientists have complained about this problem, but there has been no solution. For reference: I use OSX Lion 10.7.5 and Word 2011, with all the latest updates. Please direct me what I can do to resolve this.

What is the author-year-suffix citation style?
Hi,
i am looking for citation style that adds a suffix in case of same author same year, rather than adding the first name of the author. I tried already a bunch of different styles but never could find a suitable one.
So: Smith2000a instead of A. Smith 2000.
ideally the bibliography should then have two columns first the short name, then the biographical data
Thanks!

Document type "chapter" versus "book section" in CSL editor
hi,
I am trying to format my list of reference using the CSL editor. when it comes to formatting a book chapter, Mendeley calls them (in the document type)"book section" while the term "chapter" is not available. Unfortunately the CSL editor seems to only recognize the word "chapter" (as a conditional) and "book section" is not available...
I have been unable to format book chapter the way I want...
Any workaround? Am I missing something?
thanks

notes
Someone please tell me how notes are useful if you can't link them into your paper or gather them into one doc so to have a comprehensive overview of highlighted points.
Love if someone could tell me how they are useful. Right now I have to cut and paste any notes from program to doc... might as well do it directly??
Realling hoping there is a way to enter the note number and insert the notes or quotes.
please help

Changing order of references
Hi,
When I make a reference with several different texts, Mendeley automatically orders the different texts. However, this problematic when I want to make a reference like
blablabla Scannell (1996, see also Moores 2012).
Is there a way to change the order manually without breaking the link?
Thanks!
Nina

Linked citation repeats every time I refresh citations
In two places in my document, I cite a particular author's 2004 paper. For some reason, the citation appears fine, but is followed by a second citation for a 2009 paper by the same author, which is not cited anywhere in the document. Every time I refresh the citations, the 2009 paper is listed again until I get text that looks like this:
blah blah blah (author 2004)(author 2009)(author 2009)(author2009)(author 2009). Blah blah blah...
How do I fix this?

Word counts
Why when using the word plug in (with vancouver superscript referencing) does e.g. epidemic^1–3 count as two words whereas epidemic^2,3 is just one? This is adding a scary amount of words to my dissertation!! Thank you.

Library access links
We're having trouble setting up our Library access links, as adding our Discovery search URL takes us to a page that our students don't have passwords for (our eproxy login is not recognised). I've tried looking for the open url for my instititution, but was unable to find it in the Worldcat registry or anywhere else. Any suggestions?

How to homogenize citation on Word
Hello,
I am used to make citation with Mendeley but there is one thing for which i don't know how to proceed.
With Word, when I cite in text AND in a caption (a picture for example) the citation of the picture take the last number of the bibliography (in Nature style for example). I suppose that's a question of Word style of writting... Although I would like to cite in my caption but with the numbering following the last number obtain for the text citation made before. Have you a solution ? Can we configure the Word plugin in order to insert citation in ascending order without take care of style ?
Thank you

Insert Bibliography
When I use the "insert bibliography" plugin for Word all it does is display "{BIBILIOGRAPHY} " instead of actually inserting a bibliography. I inserted citations using Mendeley for this document. This function was working properly, but now I have this problem.

Citations and references becoming unlinked?
Hi there,
There is probably a technical term for this but I don't know what it is. I have a large (400 pages) Word for Mac 2011doc which contains literally hundreds of citations and a 40 page bibliography. It was sent off for review and returned with comments in track. I went through doing the edits and after about 120 pages discovered that the in-text citations were now just in the normal script.
Normally, there is no change when I've had stuff reviewed, but this time all the refs are now unlinked. Having looked through the rest of the script there is a load of referencing which will need changing so I need to either find a solution OR redo all the editing of the 120 pages on the doc in which the cites and refs are linked. I really don't want to do this because I've been doing corrections and accepting changes as I go.
I have a tough deadline and really would like to avoid spending 6 hours searching and repeating work. Any suggestions?
