Citation export new line

I am trying to edit a .CLS file to give new lines with the delimiter (to produce a readable bibtex export). I have been able to use   to add extra whitespaces where necessary but I am getting no joy with using (carriage return) or (line break). Under the default export newlines do show in emacs, but not in most text editors (kile, geany, gedit [linux] or notepad++ [windows]).
