This is not directly a Mendeley issue, as far as I can tell, but is related to the usage of Mendeley.
Here are a few of my observations of how to move citations between MS Word (MSW) and LibreOffice (LO). This comes handy when you're collaborating with persons that use one piece of software or the other. This is by no means an exhaustive test case, but should get people who in the same pickle started. I'm using LO 5.1.3.2 (x64) and MSW 2013.
This has been tested only on one PC (Windows 7, 64 bit) and may not work if file draws from different Mendeley databases (installations). This remains to be tested.
I created a new file, inserted references in MSW and saved it as .docx file. LO was having no problem reading the references and bibliography.
I created a new file, inserted reference in LO and saved it as .doc (and .docx). This was not read properly by MSW as warned by LO when saving the file. I abandoned this approach.
I created a new file, inserted reference in LO and used the "Export MS Word compatible" plugin option. After opening the file in Word and closing it (making no modifications) the file was a dud when I reopened it in LO. Still making no changes to the file, I opened it in MSW and inserted another reference and built the bibliography anew (it added the new reference). This saved file (in .doc) was read correctly by LO.
Questions:
Is there a way to read in "MS Word compatible" LO created files back to LO without the MSW intermediary? This is especially important for those that wield only LO. It's not hard to imagine a scenario where you make a draft, save it to "MSW compatible" and close the file. You realise you need to make some changes and all hell can break loose if file was not saved as .odt as well.
