how to easily adjust the sequence of citations and keep the citations as short as possible

When I wrote my paper, the number sequence of some citations is not continuous, sometimes the sequence is too long. I have to change the sequence which occurs before the discontinued sequence. How can I solve it easily? Following is an TRUE example with three positions at which there are citations. ----------------------------------------------------------------- .....Even though most of these phases were experimentally discovered (1–8). ....their structures are still controversial.(2-6, 9-27) .....caused by extreme making conditions (1–4,6,7,10,12,13,28) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Obviously, citation 7 and 8 discontinued the sequence at the 2nd position. I change the sequence at the 1st position (moved the citation 7 and 8 forward) , and the sequence became 4-27 shown in below. However, this manual method is too complicated. For the 3rd position, it will be very complicated if I want to keep the sequence of those citations as short as possible. I have to consider the sequence at the 1st and 2nd positions, and adjust them. Is there any easy way to adjust the sequence of citations and keep the citations as short as possible? Any suggestion will be highly appreciated. ----------------------------------------------------------------- .....Even though most of these phases were experimentally discovered (1–8). ....their structures are still controversial.(4-27) .....caused by extreme making conditions (1–4,6,7,10,12,13,28) -----------------------------------------------------------------
