Cite a ref. that is not in your library

Hi, I had a question about citing references in MS word. For article that I didn't create a file for it in my Mendeley library, how do I cite it using the plug-in ? I encountered this when citing some very old papers or books that I don't have their PDF files. Should I just create an empty file in my library or I could only cite them after exporting ? Thanks!
