manually change order of references in text citation

I would like a way to manually re-order the in text citations in a particular reference list to allow me to group several references together at the end of a list that counter the other references. For example, I want the in text citation to read: (Alves et al. 2007; Brown et al. 2003; Erdman 1983; Johnson et al. 1985; Nelson et al. 1981; Whitehead and Bowers 2013; Wink and Witte 1984; Wink and Witte 1985; Zangerl and Rutledge 1996; but see Dement and Mooney 1974; Ehrlen and Eriksson 1993; Isman et al. 1977) I want the last three references to come after the "but see", but Mendeley automatically is ordering the references alphabetically and there doesn't seem to be a way to manually override this setting. In EndNote I used to work around this issue by suppressing both the author name and the year (basically the entire ciation) for the citations I wanted at the end of the list and then adding them manually as a text "suffix" after the last citation in the first part of the list, but I don't see a way to suppress both the author name and year in Mendeley. Thanks--any help would be appreciated!
