managing initials

Three questions/problems with initials 1) When will Mendeley see Smith, John and Smith, J as the same author? (and not add initials in the in-line citation in Word) 2) What is the correct way to input or format the author initials in Mendeley? Smith, J. (with a dot) or Smith, J (without a dot)? As now a bibliography is a mix of initials with and without dot (depending on the style). An automated function putting a dot everywhere (or removing all dots) would be nice. 3) What is the correct way to input or format the author initials when he has middle name(s) in Mendeley? Smith, J. A. (with a space and a dot) Smith, J.A. (without space but with a dot) Smith, J A (with a space and without a dot) Smith, JA (without space and dot)
