how to reliably delete a citation from text? I deleted all and still they are in reference list.

I have the problem that I cited the same papers from two different groups, but Mendeley did not recodnized them as the same ones, so I had behind the same paper sometimes "a" and sometimes "b". So I started to re-add the citations manually and try to keep only one source. However, although I removed all "b" citations in the case of one, there is still written "a" behind all of them. Could you help me? Once it worked, but I think there might be the problem with the merged citations... Because everytime I try to remove a citation from a bigger merged list, Mendeley asks me if I "want to keep manual edit" and gets stuck. Sometimes, this citation is back anyway after a while... Thank you for any advice!
