"Synchronization could not be completed"

For several days, I have had synchronization problems with Mendeley. Historically, similar problems have sometimes be related to problems with my institution's ISP or changes to proxy configuration, but that doesn't seem to be the problem now. I've played around with Mendeley's connection settings, the OS's connection settings but without success (and I'm not having internet connectivity problems with other applications). It is difficult to pin the problem down. Typically, I receive a message "Synchronization could not be completed" and suggesting I contact support if the problem is persistent (which it is). Sometimes the details are simply "Synchronization was restarted 51 times"; sometimes there is a message of the form "could not contact [complicated URL]". Mendeley's progress bar tends to stall at a relatively high percentage (e.g. "99% Completed 237 of 238 tasks") and remains stalled of one tries to stop it (e.g. "Cancelling ..." forever!). Quitting the application, then restarting simply restarts the cycle of hanging. I'm willing to accept that there could be some configuration issue on my end, but it's tough to be sure. In any case, the app is not providing me with sufficient information to allow me to solve the problem on my own. Any ideas?
